FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: SPEED DATING FOR THE ARTS: SPRING FLING 2 IS HERE
Toronto, ON – January 26, 2011 – The Stand Firm Central Network is hosting its second annual Spring Fling Speed dating for the arts event at the Annex Live on Thursday, February 24, 2011, between 6-9pm. More than 10 culturally diverse arts organizations participate in this fun and flirty annual event that offers live entertainment, mouthwatering food and lots of incredible door prizes. Admission is free with the completion of a short preliminary questionnaire. "I really enjoyed attending Spring Fling last year. The event connected me to arts organizations I had not heard of before and made me appreciate the diversity of Toronto more. I've now attended a few shows by some of the participating groups like COBA and Obsidian Theatre" said last year’s co-host and lawyer, El-Farouk Khaki. The first annual Spring Fling event was held last year at the Harlem Underground and attracted over 60 would-be volunteers. Ten organizations from the Stand Firm Central Network participated. Held a few weeks after Valentine’s Day, participants were given an opportunity to have a 3 minute "date" with each of the participating culturally diverse arts organizations in the hopes of striking up an intimate working relationship. "We think it’s very important to help connect people with these non profit arts organizations who do incredible, engaging and eye-opening work. Arts are often seen as edgy and cool, and sometimes that can be intimidating for non-artists" said Anita Agrawal, the organizer for Spring Fling. "Spring Fling opens that door to show people how they can get involved in the arts using whatever skills or expertise they already possess. There is so much organizational and infrastructural work that needs to be done in order to produce great art, and volunteers in any capacity are an important part of that process. Volunteering in the arts is such a rewarding and enriching experience for both skills development and personal growth".
