Ernst & Young grows presence in Western Canada; Saskatchewan´s Hergott Duval Stack LLP to join firm

(Toronto) Ernst & Young has signed a letter of intent that will see Hergott Duval Stack LLP – the largest independent accounting, tax and business advisory firm in the fast-growing province of Saskatchewan – join our firm. The transaction will cement Ernst & Young´s presence in Western Canada and further the firm´s Entrepreneurial Services reach from coast to coast.

"Hergott Duval Stack´s reputation is unparalleled in Saskatchewan, particularly in the private mid-market space," says Trent Henry, Ernst & Young Chairman and CEO in Canada. "Over the last 30 years, they have redefined the meaning of exceptional client service. We´re delighted to be joining forces to provide comprehensive service for businesses looking to succeed at the heart of one of Canada´s busiest markets, and beyond."

This transaction comes on the heels of Ernst & Young´s deal with RSM Richter in Toronto and Calgary last December, and its acquisition of OME Group Consultants in August 2011 – both of which underpinned the expansion of the firm´s flourishing Entrepreneurial Services practice.

Given the breadth and depth of Hergott Duval Stack relationships across Saskatchewan´s private mid-market space, Henry is particularly excited about how this deal boosts Ernst & Young´s Western Canada operations and Entrepreneurial Services practice. "Like us, Hergott Duval Stack is committed to working with, supporting and celebrating entrepreneurs. Those common values empower us to up our game in Entrepreneurial Services, and offer private companies the innovative services they need to propel their businesses – and the Canadian economy – forward."

Harper Government Continues to Strongly Support Canada's Manufacturing Sector

The Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, today highlighted the Harper Government´s contributions to helping build a strong manufacturing sector and how key elements of Economic Action Plan 2012 will significantly strengthen the ability of Canadian businesses to grow and create high-value jobs.

Speaking at the Waterloo Region Manufacturing Innovation Network´s Manufacturing Summit in Kitchener, Ontario, Minister Flaherty said, "Manufacturing and exporting represent two major drivers of our country´s economy. Our Plan will allow manufacturers in Ontario, and businesses throughout Canada, to compete more effectively and to succeed in markets around the world."

In Economic Action Plan 2012, the Harper Government has committed to enhance trade and investment relationships in large and fast-growing global markets. This includes strengthening ties with China, Canada´s second-largest trading partner.

The Plan will also consolidate Canada´s trade remedy system into one organization under the Canadian International Trade Tribunal. This will cut red tape and provide a single window for Canadian businesses to take action against unfair trade, while generating cost savings.

Alberton, Prince Edward Island—The Government of Canada announced new funding to support youth in West Prince to help them gain the knowledge they need to enter and succeed in the job market. The announcement was made by the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of National Revenue and Member of Parliament for Egmont, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.

Connecting with Employment Service Providers to Find Skilled Aboriginal Workers

Canada is a quiet country spanning 4,500 miles coast to coast, and those miles are filled with unique locales and peoples. Its cultural history and makeup include the Aboriginal populations defined as First Nations (North American Indian), Métis, and Inuit populations. The minority populations are also the fastest growing groups with Statistics Canada reporting 1.1 million Aboriginals in the country. The population is expected to grow six times faster than non-Aboriginal populations at least through 2017, meaning the minority citizens are a major human resource pool of potential employees and entrepreneurs.

To address the needs of the Aboriginal community in areas of employment, the government created the Aboriginal Community Career Employment Services Society (ACCESS). It is a program designed to provide urban Aboriginals access to whatever services are needed to overcome barriers to employment and self-sufficiency. ACCESS offers counselling, training, education, pre-employment and employment assistance, trades training, apprenticeship programs, financial assistance and a variety of funded programs meeting specific needs. This unique one-stop service centre in Vancouver is remarkably comprehensive and serves as a model for minority development programs in other countries.

ACCESS is just one of many Aboriginal Agreement Holders for the Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training (ASETS) program. While ACCESS works primarily with urban Aboriginals in Vancouver, ASETS works with all Aboriginals regardless of location. The purpose of ASETS is to provide the connection between what the labour force demands in skills and Aboriginal access to training to meet those needs.

One-Stop for Ease of Access

ASETS is a one-stop shop for employers and potential employees. It offers skills development, training, programs for youth, programs for people with disabilities, urban programs and other services. On the ASETS website, employers can enter a free online platform called Aboriginal Canada Portal, where country wide job openings targeted to Aboriginals can be posted.

APASO Toronto 2012 Follow Up
April was a busy month! TAPA hosted the APASO (Association of Performing Arts Service Organizations) Conference which was a great success. Right now North American ASO’s have reached a critical juncture in terms of understanding our role in these uncertain times. The conference addressed this predicament by providing core content and carefully cast keynote/plenary speakers who set the tone for a rigorous discussion.  Keynote Speaker Simon Brault provided a context whereas Plenary Speaker Tim Jones focussed on strategy. They both provided a complimentary set of arguments addressing current overarching concerns; and the subsequent panel and break-out sessions enabled lots of lively discussion amongst delegates.

APASO Toronto 2012 was a defining event signalling the rise of TAPA's influence beyond the local community and demonstrated our capacity to play a larger leadership role in North America. Thank you to the Ontario Arts Council in particular for their support and to all the contributing efforts made by the TAPA Board of Directors and staff team and last but certainly not least, to all the fabulous TAPA member host venues: The  Royal Alexandra Theatre, The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre, Hart House, The Second City and Theatre Passe Muraille. As budgets are squeezed and staff sizes are reduced, the benefits of partnering with fellow arts groups, community organizations and local businesses are undeniable. TAPA was pleased to work with Orchestras Canada, CCI, the ASO Learning Network and Creative Enterprise Initiative in hosting a post-APASO conference event COUNTING NEW BEANS: Intrinsic Impact and the Value of Art, a presentation by Clayton Lord, Director of Communications and Audience Development for Theatre Bay Area in San Francisco. Some TAPA members were able to attend. For those of you who couldn’t join us, CLICK HERE for the full presentation. Audiences are an important part of our ecosystem and at TAPA we are looking forward to launching the AUDIENCE PROJECT soon – a special notice will be sent separately about this project and how your company can participate. Thanks for your continued support and participation in the Alliance!

draft89 Theate Collective

The Mandate
draft89 creates original interdisciplinary Canadian theatre in a collaborative environment. Every show contributes to the learning of new skills and to the growth of the artists. Every production provides a forum for new and emerging artists to hone their skills, pursue new interests, and fuel their passion for art. The collective members are multi-talented artists able to play a variety of roles within the company. draft89’s events and workshops showcase Canadian artistic talent in an array of mediums. draft89 intends to make independent theatre more visible and increase patronage of the arts.
Draft89 was founded in 2003 in Vancouver, BC, and moved to Toronto in 2004.

The Name
F. Scott Fitzgerald, the subject of our 2002/2003 production Tragic Eccentrics, claimed that he would write between 70 and 150 drafts of each of his novels.  This is a staggering body of work which represents not just a concern for the goal, but also for the process.  It represents a lifetime of commitment to constantly improving one’s craft.  What did the 89th draft of The Great Gatsby look like?  Like every one of our productions, we hope.  A considerable leap forward from the last one, and only a hint of what is to come.

Does Theatre Still Matter?
Once, live theatre was the only way to communicate the same story to large numbers of people.  Today it is possible to watch a work of fiction performed on a handheld device while riding on the bus.  Film and television have enormous budgets, and even a modest production can reach millions of people.  Against these odds, ordinary theatre just isn’t good enough.  To remain relevant, we must excel in areas where film and television cannot compete.
What happens in the story before the first line of dialog?  If I look back over my shoulder, what is going on behind me?  In the world of pre-recorded drama, these questions don’t even make sense.  In the world of interdisciplinary theatre, they are opportunities to create an experience that is impossible anywhere else, for any amount of money.

Interdisciplinary Theatre
Does theatre have boundaries?  When does a play become a musical?  A dance?  An installation?  At draft89, we view all these distinctions as meaningless.  Each of our productions strives to put our audience at the heart of an experience.  FOE (2006) put them in a living art gallery.  John/Yoko Bed Piece (2009) put them in a Montreal hotel room for one famous week.  Islands (2011) will put them five hundred years in the future and ha

More on crowd fundraising and why online donors are so special

My crowd sourcing post generated a flurry of comment and interest. And for good reason, according to this fascinating piece from NetWitsThinkTank. It says that while the majority of giving still comes from offline channels, online fundraising is becoming increasingly important for acquiring new donors. In fact, it’s the dominant giving channel for new donors 64 years old and younger, and an increasingly common way for new donors to give their first gift.

We’re testing this out right now in Toronto, by way of the Fringe’s charming and cheeky Lots of Little (LOL) Campaign. If you haven’t seen the Fringers’ penny packing video, watch it now. This campaign combines a creative and compelling ask, with a tight timeline and a matching incentive: TD Bank is matching up to $20,000 in donations to the Fringe Creation Lab until July 15th.

(Excuse me; I was just upstairs, making my donation. I want to see this one exceed its goal!)

Measuring What Counts

What really happens when a young person experiences music, theatre or dance? Is it possible to understand and explain the transformative power the arts can have on people’s lives? Can we measure joy?

These questions will be tackled during our final PAEO workshop, Measuring What Counts, May 29th, 9:30 - 1:00 at CSI Spadina. (register by emailing paonearts@gmail.com). Like the previous workshops, this one will be firmly aimed towards collaborative action and problem solving.

We all know that the numbers – how many schools, how many students, how many workshops – don’t tell the story. But we also understand that we need to go beyond anecdotes and case studies to convince the unconvinced and, ideally, free up new resources and support.  Read more

First steps towards inclusion

Creative Trust and Picasso PRO proudly wrapped up our two year Sun Life Performing Arts Access Program last month. This pioneering program, introduced to Creative Trust members on November 23, 2009, was designed to open up the city’s theatres to Blind/Low-Vision and Deaf/Hard of Hearing audiences. Using a pilot series of audio described and American Sign Language (ASL) interpreted performances, our goal was to help theatre, dance and music companies launch and integrate these services into their organizational cultures and programming.

In two short years we

  • Auditioned and trained 8 Audio Describers with renowned AD specialist Deb Lewis, moving the number of theatrical audio describers in Toronto to…8!
  • Purchased audio description kits, including headsets and accessories; created a handbook, and trained describers for the experience of live performance
  • Held a roundtable for members of the Ontario Association Of Sign Language Interpreters on the specifics of Theatrical Interpretation led by star interpreter Joanna Bennett, our ASL Project Advisor
  • Developed our chops with an in-house test-described show without public audience of Featuring Loretta at Factory Theatre Read more

Creating a page for
your company using
Facebook Timeline

by Sue Edworthy

Facebook’s new timeline format has been slowing rolling out over the past few months (I adopted in December to get an advanced handle on it). Sure enough, it’s now the way your company page is laid out. It’s fairly easy to update and reorganize if you already have a page, as you’ve been automatically transferred – but what if you don’t?

I’ve created several pages for recent clients and while it’s fairly straightforward, there are a few things to note:

You used to choose what page you wanted folks to land on – not anymore. Your option now is something called a sticky post – you pin it to the top of your newsfeed and there it stays – I find many folks are using it to direct viewers to their donor page, or placing show information there.

Building your audience – I humbly suggest you have something on your page for people to see before you invite them to like it. It’s similar to having a restaurant grand opening with no menu, or getting to the dreaded “under construction” page on a heavily promoted website. Start thoughtfully with your invites – don’t click indiscriminately. Choose people who really will like your page – quality likes – and therefore share it with others. Quantity will follow quality.

WEEK 1- May 15-20

From New York / Bogotá - Loco7                                                           URBAN ODYSSEY

MAY 15 @ 8:00pm     MAY 16- 18 @ 7:00pm    MAY 20 @  2pm

(Duration:  80 minutes)

A message from the Artistic Director:

Loco7 opens the festival with a show that combines dance, theatre and puppetry in a one-of-a kind visual experience.  I've known Federico since we were kids in Colombia dreaming of becoming artists.  In 1986 he presented his work Locombia at La MAMA in New York.  After that performance the great Ellen Stewart approached him and said:  "From today on you will be one of my children".

From that day on Federico would create, choreograph, and direct at La MaMa where Loco7 has been a resident company for the last 26 years.

I asked Federico what Ellen meant to him.

FEDE:  Ellen was my mentor.  She gave me the possibility of working and taught me never to give up.  She also told me that one should never fear anything.

BEA:  Federico, you usually refer to your puppets in Spanish as muñecos (dolls).  What do these mean to you?

FEDE:  They are like an extension of my dreams.  Other characters that have a life of their own.  I call them muñecos because I don't work with one form of puppetry.  I use many different techniques, specifically techniques that work for the dancer.  I also work with many sizes:  body puppets, which were the trademark of our early work, marionettes, and puppets as tall as 15 feet.

We are looking forward to finally bringing this great artist and company to Toronto and we hope you share this wonderful experience with us.

~Bea Pizano

Beyond Sangre Grande: Caribbean Writing Today
edited by Cyril Dabydeen

Beyond Sangre Grande brings together a contemporary selection of Caribbean fiction and poetry by authors living in Canada, the US, the UK, and the Caribbean itself. Fusing creole and other cultural streams from a changing world, these writers capture the cadences and rhythms of the Caribbean while admitting diverse influences to demonstrate the continuity and vitality of Caribbean writing today.

Jahaji: An Anthology of Indo-Caribbean Fiction
edited by Frank Birbalsingh

Indians have lived in the Caribbean for more than a hundred and sixty years, ever since they took to the ships to work on the sugar plantations. Jahaji (the term meaning “ship traveler”) brings together a representative selection of Indo-Caribbean fiction from three generations of writers. Together, the sixteen writers included here give us an imaginative depiction of the experiences of their people across a span of fifty years—the hopes, aspirations and frustrations of life in colonial Trinidad and Guyana, the post-independence tribulations of third-world citizens, and the quest for meaning and identity in the second migration to Canada, the United States, and Britain.

". . . covers a range of prose styles, while thoroughly exploring issues and preoccupations relevant to the Indo-Caribbean experience."
—Caribbean Beat Magazine

Anthology/ ISBN 978-0-920661-88-8/ Price: $21.95 $17.56 / pb/

An Island Is a World
Sam Selvon

A novel of a personal and intellectual quest in postwar Trinidad.
In the post-war Caribbean colony, as an earlier generation thinks of returning to India, Foster, a young man, goes to England and Rufus his brother leaves for the United States, each in search of himself and his world.
Combining his characteristic humour with a vivid sense of place, Selvon's An Island is a World tells a moving story of personal and intellectual quest in our time.

"His evocative descriptions . . . his humourous affectionate portrayal of character and his subtle use of folklore . . . are evidence of a master yarn-spinner."
 —The Globe and Mail

Novel/ ISBN 978-0-920661-34-5/ Price: $13.95 $11.16 / pb/

Return to Arcadia
H Nigel Thomas

When at 51, Joshua Éclair—victim of a pygmalianism gone awry—emerges from amnesia in a hospital in Montreal, he must explore what makes him want to erase his identity. This is the gripping story of a man’s search for sanity set in the fictional Caribbean Isabella Island and the various places Joshua has fled to: Montreal, New York, Tallahassee, London, Paris and Madrid.
This is a finely accomplished novel about a very modern predicament: the malformed dysfunctional identity in the global village.

"Thomas offers a fine story of forgiveness, self-actualization, and belonging."
Montreal Review of Books

Novel/ ISBN 978-1-894770-38-5/ Price: $20.95 $16.76/ pb/

Redemption Rain
Jennifer Rahim

Redemption Rain invites the reader into its profound epiphanies through patient revisitation and introspection. Rahim’s voice weaves the explosive power of her lively Trinidadian Creole with the searching intensity of one given to appreciating memory’s redemptive light. This is a book about the necessary and the unexpected; about costly arrival in the sacred spaces of realization and recognition. Always the impulse is to praise. Hers is a voice that does not shrill but invests in the finer sensibilities of justice, beauty, love, and community to bring out her poetic truth.

"a tenderly perceptive yet penetratingly measured depiction of the contemplative’s path on which spirituality, history, culture, and ecology congregate in unambiguous communal celebration. . . Here then is a poetry that speaks directly to our sense of human belonging, our recognition of smallness within vastness, our experiential encounters with love and loss."
—S Rose-Ann Walker, The University of Trinidad and Tobago

Poetry/ ISBN 978-1-894770-70-5/ Price: $17.95 $14.36 / pb/

Lantana Strangling Ixora
Sasenarine Persaud

This collection is as much about love as it is about origins and the process of estrangement. The lantana is a flower of South American origin, and the ixora of Asian origin. The lantana, a creeper that grows profusely, often engulfing other plants, provides a ready metaphor for the consciousness of the Americas overcoming that of India in the Americas. This collection ranges widely in its geographical and historical concerns. It displays a mastery over nuances of language, and is at once quirky and humorous as it continues an engagement with the theme of “place as muse.”

"Persaud’s elegant poems, though they linger heavily on loss, are quietly reassuring."
—Bostonia

Poetry/ ISBN 978-1-894770-72-9/ Price: $17.95 $14.36/ pb

Artists, architects, builders, curators and others; magicians, chefs, and gardeners to name a few, are invited to contribute to the physical and theoretical development of the space. Changing the focus from a finished product to an ongoing process of construction and collaboration allows for a move away from reified forms of knowledge to a multifarious dialogue, which, at every instance, provides possibilities for improvisation and interrogating the underpinnings on which artistic and architectural forms of knowledge are built.

Colombian artist Angélica Teuta will be a collaborator-in-residence at the Workstation, working together with the two architectureDjs-in-residence, Anne Ehrlich and Jonathan Wong, to create a new site-specific installation RE place RE quest. Teuta's own practice is well suited to this kind of collaboration; her work involves the creation of a dialogue between sculptural and photographic elements, and uses basic technology, projected and reflected light, small motors, machines, recycled objects and information to transform spaces into unique environments. Teuta's installations challenge the notions of reality we have been taught or to which we have simply become accustomed, creating a context to encourage inquiry, wonder and reflection rather than passive acceptance.

RE place RE quest is presented in collaboration with the 25th Images Festival, April 12-April 21. This project with Teuta was facilitated and is supported by the Art Gallery of York University, who will be working with her later this year on a residency in preparation for their Fall 2012 exhibition Imaginary Homelands.

Collaborator-in-Residence

Angélica Teuta is an artist living and working in Bogotá, Columbia. She studied fine art at the National University of Columbia. Teuta creates installations using light, mechanisms, and spaces. Her most recent solo show, Scenes to prevent nightmares was shown at the Cases Reigner Gallery in Bogotá and the Des Pacio Gallery in San Jose, Costa Rica. Her other solo exhibitions have been at Centro Colombo Americano, Alianza Francesa sede Centro, and Cámara de Comercio in Bogota, Galería La Vitrina in Cali, the Central Library at the National University of Columbia in Medellín, and a site-specific installation in her own home. Her work has been included in group exhibitions in Chile, Columbia, Puerto Rico, Argentina and Brazil, and has been written about in Artforum and Artnexus.

ArchitectureDjs-in-Residence

Anne Ehrlich has worked as a designer on various architectural, furniture, and exhibition projects in Toronto, Vancouver, and San Francisco. Her sculpture and drawings have been exhibited at Helen Pitt Gallery, Access Artist-Run Centre, and Antisocial Gallery in Vancouver, and Larry Wayne Richards Gallery in Toronto.

Born in Mauritius, Jonathan Wong lives and works in Toronto, Canada. He makes spatial interventions through the notion of drawing that reinvent the notion of public space. In doing so he also explores issues of affect and collaboration. He has initiated a number of independent projects that temporarily appropriate various urban spaces (back alley, lobby of public institutions, etc...) to invite the users to reconsider their usual perception of those spaces. He has exhibited at the Gendai Gallery (Toronto), Larry Wayne Richards Gallery (Toronto) and the Eye Gallery (Toronto).

(Anyone wishing to perform should plan to arrive by 6:30pm to set up their equipment.)

  MASC Mondays
MASC Mondays are held at the Arrow and the Loon Restaurant and Pub in the Glebe.  This informal coffee house was developed as an opportunity for MASC artists to get together in a casual space to share their talents, talk, eat and drink. Reaching a larger audience in the neighborhoods we serve, our artists will meet a new public.  It keeps Ottawa’s culture brewing, hot and ready for consumption!

Performances are lead collaboratively with everyone in attendance welcome to participate.  Watch for sounds and sights across disciplines and styles, played together, creating new and unpredictable experiences for the audience and artist alike!

A 'donations at the door' kind of event, we are hoping to raise funds through MASC Mondays to support our work within the community and to continue bringing Multi-Cultural excellence in the arts to schools.  Proceeds will go towards school subsidies for high-need communities.

Chers artistes CNCAC,
MERCI !
Audrey Churgin

Provincial Budget 2012: Why Harm the Vulnerable on the Road to Reform?

The 2012 Ontario Provincial Budget was released Tuesday March 27, 2012.  The Ontario Nonprofit Network (ONN) recognizes the significant fiscal pressures faced by the provincial government and finds reasons to be optimistic about some of the proposed plans for reforming policies, delivery and investments in public-benefit programs and services. We are, however, disappointed with the elements of the budget that affect that most vulnerable in communities across Ontario in a negative way.

Having made several concrete suggestions to the Commission on the Reform of Public Services, ONN takes a principled and pro-active approach to public-benefit program and service reform, which involves the following:

  • A careful and constructive examination of revenue generation to help the government achieve its fiscal objectives, which meets the principle of "Do No Harm" for those most in need of public-benefit services;
  • Meaningful partnerships between the third sector and the provincial government;
  • No privatization of public-benefit programs and publicly-held assets; and,
  • Modernization of the government-sector investment relationship.

The Provincial Budget 2012 provides some positive ideas on public-benefit reform and partnership involving the sector, and we are optimistic that actions will follow the policy directives outlined. But some of the measures taken against the most vulnerable fail to meet the principle of "Do No Harm," with Social Assistance recipients and their families being particularly hard hit, for example.

Moreover, the budget could have attained even greater savings towards the goal of fiscal balance by modestly increasing the marginal tax rate of Ontarians with earnings of $250,000 or greater in income.  A 2% tax increase to Ontarians with these earnings would have been much easier to absorb than the current budget's actions on the poorest and most vulnerable in our province.

How Does the Provincial Budget Affect You and Your Sector?

We want to hear from you about the ways in which the Provincial Budget 2012 has made an impact on your organization and your sector.  Visit our webpage, Provincial Budget Watch: What Others are Saying to find out what other nonprofits and community organizations are saying about the provincial budget. Please send your feedback and suggestions to Kim.

WEBINARS

Network Builders: Designing the Right Structures and Processes to Make it Work

Offered by the Ontario Volunteer Centre’s Network (OVCN) in partnership with ONN and sponsored by Ontario Trillium Foundation.

Presenter: Linda Mollenhauer, Mollenhauer Consulting.

Target audiences:

1.  Nonprofit organizations who are: a) currently in a network or collaboration and are wanting to ensure they have taken the appropriate steps to build their structure and processes; and, b) exploring or just establishing a network or collaboration and want to take the right steps forward.

2.  Funders, intermediaries and capacity builders: funders, including foundations, corporations, governments, United Ways, intermediaries and capacity builders, who are supporting networks/collaborations and want to learn about the key decisions points which non-profit organizations face.

Description:

With today’s complexity of issues and the pressure to work smarter, not harder, non-profit organizations are increasingly building networks or collaborations as a way to weave together and create capacities that get better leverage and results. But the key challenge for many network and collaboration builders is to ensure they are designing a network that will work effectively. Typical organizational structures and processes don’t work the same way for networks.

This webinar will help non-profit Board, management or staff members or funders and capacity builders to understand the critical choices and decisions required to put the right structure and processes in place. It will be of interested to those who are just establishing a network or collaboration and want to understand the building blocks or those who already have an established one, but want to ensure it’s built on solid foundations. You will learn about the important steps of finding unifying purpose, identifying members, choosing the organizational and governance structure and getting the work done. As well, you’ll have the opportunity to share your own experiences and hear from others. Spaces will be limited.

Dates:

  • March 30, 2012, 12-1:30pm (EST)  Cost: Free. Register Here (Spaces left)

Thu, 29 Mar 2012 20:11:10 -0700 STATEMENT/DÉCLARATION : Federal Budget 2012 / Budget fédéral 2012 http://standfirm.posterous.com/statementdeclaration-federal-budget-2012-budg http://standfirm.posterous.com/statementdeclaration-federal-budget-2012-budg

STATEMENT / DÉCLARATION

Federal Budget 2012 / Budget fédéral 2012

Canada Council speaks on federal budget

"The Canada Council for the Arts is enormously heartened by the positive message sent by the 2012 budget and the support of the government in recognizing the Council's leadership role," said Canada Council Board Chair Joseph L. Rotman. "This vote of confidence in the Council is a clear signal of support for the arts as the creative heart of the nation. This government and the Minister of Canadian Heritage, the Hon. James Moore, clearly appreciate the sector's positive contribution to the economy and identity of this country. It makes it all the more important that we continue to demonstrate the highest possible standard in our investment of public funds."

Throughout its 55-year history, the Council and its programs continue to evolve, keeping pace with changes in both the practice of art and the demographic realities of the country. Its strong focus on demonstrable results has been repeatedly highlighted, most recently in the Special Examination by the Auditor General of Canada (2008) and Strategic Review (2010) and its most recent strategic plan, Strengthening Connections 2011-16. In 2011 the Council established a process to assess current and future program options against its highest level objective: a vital and diverse arts sector that enriches the lives of Canadians.

"The government's decision to maintain the Council's funding gives us the opportunity to independently take actions that will generate savings that we can reinvest back into the professional arts sector. It will also enable us to ensure our programs continue to be relevant, cost-effective and responsive to the changing needs of the community," said Director and CEO Robert Sirman. "Over the next three years we will implement a number of changes that are already in development, including reducing the cost of our office space, streamlining operational processes and adjusting programs."

In the coming months, the Council will review options that address its traditional commitment to the core of creative arts practice while reflecting areas of increasing priority, including equity, public engagement, and national and international market access.

The Canada Council for the Arts is an arms-length Crown corporation that strengthens Canadian arts practice and connects the public to the arts using a parliamentary appropriation of roughly $5.25 per capita. Through its grants, awards, prizes and payments, the Council supports over 20,000 artists and arts organizations annually. It also houses the Canada Council Art Bank with over 17,000 works of contemporary Canadian art and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. Governed by an 11-person board, the Council reports to Parliament through the Minister of Canadian Heritage and is audited annually by the Auditor General of Canada.
